The city of Barcelona is a constant favourite for tourists, and has been a top short stay destination for the last few years. However, it's also becoming increasingly popular as a relocation destination. Let's look at why.

Given Barcelona 's prime location within Europe , the Catalan Capital is a hub for business with many conferences and congresses held in the city each year. Lots of businesses are relocating their central offices to the city, given its excellent connections with air and rail transport. This is also having an effect on the growing population many Europeans are looking to move into Barcelona and relocate their family or significant other, too. Barcelona has the attraction of the beach; meaning water sports and sunbathing are just a walk away. There is fantastic countryside in and around Catalonia offering endless excursions, rock-climbing, rambling and camping opportunities, as well as exploring the historical Roman cities and towns nearby. The South of France and the Pyrenees mountains are just a few hours drive away, meaning skiing or snowboarding is a perfectly normal hobby to have if you're living in Barcelona , too.

As Barcelona is restricted geographically, there is not a great deal of space to fight over when it comes to real estate. Barcelona is flanked by two mountains; Tibidabo at the back, and Montjic to the left. At the bottom of the city lies the Mediterranean Sea, and there are the Llobregat and Besos Rivers either side, so the city is contained by natural forces and cannot really grow anywhere but up. This has also had an effect on the real estate market, meaning that Barcelona properties and particular neighbourhoods are always in demand and had seen their prices increase steadily up until the global economic turndown of 2008.

If a particular property has something special about it, then it will attract a lot of interest and likely have a high price. Attic apartments with terraces, high-floor apartments facing the sea (and therefore sunrise) which have natural sunlight all day, historical buildings in the Old Town , or larger apartments are always great sellers. The neighbourhoods which are most in demand when it comes to the relocation depends on the individual circumstance, but the old town neighbourhoods of the Gothic Quarter, the old fisherman's quarters of Barceloneta and the upper class neighbourhood of Pedralbes are firm favourites for the foreigners.
