Barcelona is a fantastic city. Lying on the banks of the Mediterranean Sea and with a mild climate year round, it's no surprise that even the world's professionals have put the city on a pedestal. Read on to find out how.

In September of 2009, three major survey results were published which cemented Barcelona 's position as an incredible place to live and work. First of all, the well-respected travel guide agency, Time Out, placed Barcelona as the 5 th best city in the world. The survey decided on various aspects of city life including Architecture, Arts and Culture, Buzz, Food and Drink, Quality of Life and World Status.

It's easy to see why Barcelona has fared so well in the survey based on the above criteria. With 9 UNESCO World Heritage Sites of cultural interest, and many others which are equally as breathtaking and modern, the city was sure not to fail here. The restaurants in Barcelona have been influenced by the influx of immigrants and mixes of worldly cuisines, as well as the local chef, Ferran Adria, whose restaurant in northern Catalonia has been voted the best restaurant in the world for the past 5 years no mean feat.

The second and third surveys to shine the light over Barcelona , were from London-based Real Estate Agency, Cushman and Wakefield , which confirmed Barcelona 's status as a shopping central with their retail global index. The second report, however, makes even more interesting reading the European Cities Monitor. This report is complied by over five hundred executives and agencies and promoted Barcelona to number four as a Business capital. Perhaps the most telling takeaway from the report, however, was that Barcelona was found as number one in terms of quality of life for employees of businesses with their offices in Barcelona .

Its privileged position in Europe with fantastic transport links makes visiting other European cities on short breaks be it for business or pleasure a breeze. You can be skiing in the Pyrenees one weekend and then catching the last of the summer sun on the Balearic Islands the next. If you fancy visiting other cities within Spain itself, the excellent new AVE fast train is an unbeatable option even refunding the fare if the train arrives more than thirty minutes late. It's easy to see why 2010 will see another sharp increase in people moving to Barcelona !
